California and Valenciaport are decarbonizing their trucks

California (USA) has approved the Advanced Clean Fleet measure, which will ban new diesel trucks from ports and railyards from 2024 onwards and prohibit the sale of all new medium and heavy-duty vehicles by 2036. Drayage trucks will be able to register their status as zero-emission starting in 2024. As all drayage trucks will be required to be zero-emissions by 2035, diesel trucks will be banned in California ports by that time as well. In the port of Valencia (Spain), the first green hydrogen driven truck has been implemented to move containers within the terminals. This is an important step in Valenciaport’s “Zero Emissions” objective by 2030.

New Low Carbon Industrial Zone in Le Havre

Le Havre (France) has become the third port zone to win the call for projects titled “Low Carbon Industrial Zones” in the framework of France 2030, which has made €5.6 billion available for industrial decarbonization. HAROPA Port and local authorities will receive €7.4 million in funds to support the accelerated deployment of technologies, infrastructures, and networks vital for the decarbonization of the port industrial zone. The first phases are focused on studying the decarbonization trajectory and engineering studies for deployment of new technology. The aim is to launch a carbon capture network along the Seine axis with a liquefaction terminal to transport the emissions to a storage site in the North Sea.

Dublin Port (Ireland) announces new Art and Engagement Program

‘Connections: The Port, the City, Arts and Education’ is the title of the new edition of this cultural initiative taking place at the Pumphouse of the port. The building, a key part of port of Dublin’s heritage, has been repurposed into an artistic and cultural venue. The program includes completed art and design outputs, as well as workshops led by experienced artists with school pupils and art students from college level. Under a comprehensive program, established artists and students will participate in short residencies and performances, including theatre and music – designed and customised for the Pumphouse context. Cultural actions are part of the AIVP Agenda 2030, because they contribute to the social integration of the port. As the CEO of Dublin Port Company indicates: “The use of the Pumphouse is part of Dublin Port’s long-term strategy of connecting Port and City.”

Algeciras and Oslo: Renewed efforts to recover the maritime heritage

The Fort of Isla Verde, constructed in 1734, is one of the most peculiar properties of the Port Authority of Algeciras (Spain), having exceptional heritage value for the region as a witness of many battles and the port’s evolution. For this reason, the Port Authority has been developing a heritage conservation plan since 2006, which is now entering into its 3rd and final phase. The final stage will focus on the valorization for public visits, rebuilding elements such as main gates, a new pavement and lighting, as well as the construction of a new interpretation center. The estimated cost of these works will be €3 million, allowing its integration in the social activity program of the port authority. Other port cities like Oslo (Norway) are valorizing their maritime heritage, such as the three cranes in Filipstad that will now be dismounted and refurbished to be preserved as a memory of the port activities in the area.
