:The Mauritius Ports Authority (MPA) is the sole national port authority set up under the Ports Act 1998, to regulate and control the port sectors in the Republic of Mauritius, including Rodrigues and all outer islands. The MPA is a landlord port authority, providing the main port infrastructure and superstructure, together with related facilities. It also provides marine services and navigation aids, while it regulates and controls all port activities and environmental issues within the designated port areas. As the provider of infrastructures and superstructures with an asset base exceeding MUR 24 billion and managing over 8.1 million tonnes of cargo a year, the MPA is keen on delivering an integrated service in view of making Port Louis Harbour the preferred maritime gateway of the region by embracing innovation, creativity and sustainable practices. To maintain the attractiveness of Port Louis Harbour as a global hub port, the MPA relentlessly plans its development projects ahead of demand to ensure that the port remains highly efficient and competitive. The MPA has spawned the growth of emerging businesses: bunkering; container transshipment; fishing; fly-cruise tourism and home porting cruise activities; ship repairs/ship building; and shipping agency/freight forwarding/ship brokerage; under the Government’s Ocean Economy Initiative and vision 2030. Port Louis Harbour is a key node on the trade routes between Africa, Europe and Asia. With a dredged depth of 16.5 metres, Port Louis Harbour is ideally positioned to accomodate most of the contemporary sea-going vessels. With a capacity of over 750,000 TEUs and serviced by 2 super-post-panamax and 5 post-panamax ship-to-shore cranes, the Mauritius Container Terminal (MCT) offers shipping lines and agencies unparalleled possibilities of streamlined services that save both time and money. Furthermore, the MPA is in the process of proceeding on the second phase of its planned development programme through: 1. the construction of a breakwater and an Island Terminal Container 2. the development of a full-fledged fishing port at the recently reclaimed land of Fort Willian; and 3. the construction of a state-of-the-art Cruise Terminal Building, covering an area of about 7,500 square metres and capable of handling up to 4,000 passengers at one point in time.
