It also offers a highly strategic position for the world’s biggest international shipping lines looking for quick access to a large number of West African capitals. At the Port of Lome, economic operators and port users benefit from range of ISO 9001 (2015 version) certified services for the docking of ships, 14001 (2015 version) certified for environment, OHSAS 18001 (2007 version) certified for health and security and security standards in line with the international Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. With the introduction of "One-stop service for External Trade" (known by the acronym GUCE), the Port of Lomé offers users a tool for simplifying administrative formalities and securing port and customs operations. The Port of Lome has diverse infrastructures and offers high quality stevedoring services provided by internationally-renowned companies. To enhance its competitiveness, Port of Lome has embarked on a programme to extend and modernize its facilities. A third dock, some 450 metres long and with a depth of 15 metres, entered service in October 2014. The new 38-hectare container Terminal is currently equipped with four ship-to-shore gantry cranes and eight terminal cranes. The 16.60 m depth and 1050 m of straight dock, built as part of the Lome Container Terminal project, allow the port of Lomé to handle transhipment traffic for the whole West African Coast. The Terminal is equipped with nine ship-to-shore gantry cranes and 24 terminal cranes for cutting edge handling. Eventually, the Port of Lome will be able to manage almost 4 million containers of traffic. This Terminal covers 50 hectares areas. The aim of the Togolese government is to make Lome both an essential port for transhipment for West Africa, and a growth engine for the national economy.
