About the expert

Charles advises port companies and developers on complex projects in the coastal and marine space in terms of environment, social (E&S), HSE, sustainability, energy, carbon footprinting/GHG emissions and climate change risks.

His experience in ports is based on practical operational experience with DP World (Global Environment Manager, 2008 – 12) and 20 years consultancy experience in masterplanning through to detailed design for port authorities, terminal operators, dockyards, cities and municipalities. As well as designing an Environmental Strategy for DP World (including the preparation of Minimum Global Standards, e.g. EN-5 ‘Sustainability in New Terminals’, and setting-up 28 EMSs to ISO14001), he visited container terminals in port-cities throughout Africa, North America, the Arabian Gulf, Sub-Continent, Asia Pacific and Europe leading audits/inspections, troubleshooting, working on loan deals and providing training.

In WSP’s Maritime team, Charles works on fully-integrating environmental awareness and sustainability features into maritime engineering projects, advises on consenting, construction techniques, low emissions’ technology and E&S monitoring for loans. His involvement (as Chair) in the PIANC Working Group 178 on climate change adaption in ports, inland waterways and navigation infrastructure complements WSP’s desire to help the leading lights of resilience programmes – “port-cities” – become “future ready”. Charles was a rapporteur at AIVP’s global conference in Quebec, Canada, 2018.”

By providing opportunities for the public and technology businesses to safely access port areas and witness maritime activities, people can feel engaged and connected to this misunderstood industry. Low carbon interlinked mobility and access is not only beneficial for the economy, amenity and even the mental health of residents, workers and tourists, but can evoke the feelgood factor. Only collaboration can make this happen.
