About the expert

Dr Tom Daamen is Associate Professor at Delft University of Technology and Director of the Dutch Foundation for Area Development Knowledge. He is a researcher, speaker and academic advisor on waterfront change in port cities and the governance of complex spatial projects. To this end, Tom combines knowledge from property development and finance with insights from the fields of urban and port economics, governance, planning, and design. In Delft, he leads a research group that focuses on the public-private delivery of complex urban redevelopment projects. Tom is an acknowledged international expert on development strategies for waterfronts zones, and he publishes regularly on the evolution of port-city relationships. On these topics, he leads several research projects, teaches both students and professionals in the relevant fields, and provides advise to both port and city authorities.

My passion is to help students and professionals become effective port city makers. To do this, I provide them with knowledge and tools for inclusive, interdisciplinary collaboration (public-private-civic) in “hybrid’ waterfront development research and practice.
