APDL is the Port Authority of the Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo, which is situated in the North-West of the Iberian Peninsula, in the North of Portugal, in the Oporto Metropolitan Area, with about 2 million of inhabitants. The Port Authority is a public joint-stock company, which is engaged in the administration of the Douro, Viana and Leixões ports and Douro’s Inland Waterway, aiming at its economic exploitation, conservation and development. The Port of Leixões is the second biggest port of Portugal in terms of quantity of tons handled per year, representing about 21% of Portuguese foreign trade by sea. The preoccupation with the urban integration of the port grew and today this issue is accepted as a strategic perspective within the future development of the port.
