Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, a Spanish region with a particularly strong culture, personality, and traditions. In 2026, Barcelona has 1.7 million inhabitants, making it the second largest city in Spain after Madrid. The organization of the 1992 Olympic Games made it possible, beyond the sporting events, to carry out an urban project that profoundly changed the geography of Barcelona: the creation of beaches and marinas in the city, the expansion of the airport to twice its size and, above all, the renovation of the oldest part of the port, “Port Vell,” and the adjacent neighborhoods. The Barcelona Regional Agency was created in 1993 by public sector organizations and companies with the aim of providing a technical tool that would enable them to act and cooperate with the various agents working in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area. It is organized as a direct management entity of its reference partners, and its main function is to provide specialized assistance services to its members and other actors involved in the fields of urban planning, the environment, and infrastructure.
