Cruises and Port Cities Working Group

In November 2021, the International Association of Cities and Ports (AIVP) and MedCruise formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding, launching the joint Cruises and Port Cities Working Group. This initiative brings together members of both organizations to foster more sustainable relationships between cruise activity and urban port communities.

Objectives

The Working Group serves as a collaborative platform for port authorities, city representatives, cruise operators, and other stakeholders to address the challenges and opportunities of cruise tourism in port cities. Its main goals are to:

  • Exchange knowledge and good practices for sustainable cruise-port relations
  • Promote dialogue and transparency between cruise stakeholders and local communities
  • Support policies that balance economic, environmental, and social priorities

Activities and Achievements

Between 2021 and 2024, the group held 13 meetings, welcoming contributions from cities, ports, government agencies, cruise lines, and international experts. These discussions led to the creation of the Cruise Port City Compass—a strategic document that outlines practical solutions, key challenges, and case studies for managing cruise-related urban issues sustainably.

This publication was officially presented at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami and is now a cornerstone reference for cities and ports working to improve cruise-port coexistence.

Second Phase: Priorities

The second phase of the Working Group focuses on two priority areas:

  • Governance and Citizens’ Engagement: How cruise companies can contribute more actively to the social and civic life of port cities
  • Flow Management and Mobility: Solutions for managing passenger flows and reducing congestion in urban settings

To support this work, the group will be joined by two external experts: one from a cruise company, and another from a transport and mobility planning firm.

Format and Timeline

The Working Group will meet online twice a year (in spring and autumn) and will host a physical event in early 2026. A final capitalization session will be organized during Seatrade Cruise Global in April 2026.
