Challenge(s)
How can sustainable mobility be developed for citizens in the port city interface?
Good practice
Promoting sustainable modes of transportation
Promoting alternative modes of transport to automobiles makes it possible to improve accessibility and reduce road congestion in port-city territories; the most common include going on foot, by bicycle, or on shared transportation (tramway, cable cars, etc.). In certain port cities, the local geography makes unusual transportation an attractive option. Such solutions can provide other benefits besides improved accessibility to port-city sites. For the environment, it reduces road traffic, hence the associated GHG emissions. And, for the attractiveness of the port city territory, it can become a tourist attraction. These benefits can be seen in Tangiers, where the port opted for a cable car idea.
Case study
The project to reconvert the port of Tangiers covers an area of 84 ha and aims to position Tangiers as a mainstream tourist and cultural destination in the Mediterranean. Part of the project is a 2 km cable car system that will link the downtown area and the marinas, the new fishing port, the passenger terminal, and the Kasbah. Its capacity will be 2800 passengers per hour in each direction. There will be viewpoints towards the port, the marinas, the bay, and the Medina. The proposal was approved in 2021, and in 2023, the municipality launched a call for tenders for the first phase on a 1.3 km route. Its cost is estimated at 240 million Dirhams, and it will be put into service by 2024. The project aims to provide a solution for mobility while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
