The Safe and Climate Resilient Ports (SAFARI) project is a European project that is part of the Horizon Europe 2021-2027 research program. It involves several types of partners (port authorities, universities, associations, companies, etc.). The main objective of this initiative is to prevent and mitigate the effects of climate change on port infrastructure, personnel, and their activities. By creating a digital platform, the consortium aims to enable ports to maintain 80% of their activities during periods of disruption.

Project duration: May 1, 2024, to October 31, 2027

AIVP is a committed partner for resilient ports

With over 30 years of experience in promoting sustainable development in port areas, AIVP has chosen to become a partner in the European SAFARI project, as it is fully in line with its strategic priorities. SAFARI aims to improve the resilience of ports to the growing impacts of climate change, in particular by developing tools for managing extreme weather conditions in cooperation with ports and key partners such as urban communities and cities.

Participation in the project enables AIVP to become actively involved in the challenges facing the five member ports in its network. The Association is strengthening its expertise alongside engineers, resilient planning specialists, and port sector professionals, focusing on key themes.

By actively participating in the project, AIVP seized the opportunity to strengthen its commitment to more sustainable, innovative, and resilient port cities while offering its expertise to partners (benchmarking, mobilization of its member network, webinars).

AIVP’s missions in the SAFARI project

AIVP is active in the following Work Packages:

WP1 (Overall Management):

Project coordination

WP2 (Communication, dissemination & exploitation):
  • A benchmark to provide a brief overview of the strategies and measures implemented by ports to respond to climate change over the past year
  • Action plan to communicate the results obtained to stakeholders involved in SAFARI and partners beyond the scope of the project
  • Webinars
  • Bringing together experts from the AIVP network and SAFARI partners in the context of financing maritime innovation and infrastructure for climate and oceans

WP5 (Institutional Measures for extremes weather events):
  • Review of United Nations publications based on good practices for ports and port cities in terms of resilience and climate change
  • Creation of a governance framework for the port with best practices aimed at better managing climate risks and their impacts
  • Collaboration with climate experts to highlight how cities and ports can work together to build a resilient future for their territory.
  • Analysis of strategic documents for crisis management, produced by ports/cities
