The Port of Auckland (New Zealand) has announced that it is nearing the finalisation of its in-port biofouling solution to clean niche areas of vessels. Biofouling, or the undesirable build-up of microorganisms, plants, algae and animals on a ship’s underwater surfaces like its hull, is a major contributor to invasive species and can impact vessels’ fuel efficiency. The pilot, once approved and upscaled, is meant to provide maritime transport lines and cruise operators with confidence to operate in New Zealand waters while maintaining biosecurity and helping preserve the country’s marine environment. The solution will decrease the need to clean vessels offshore, facilitating access to the Port. It is expected that this solution will be in use in the summer of 2026.
