The Brittany Region is a local authority composed of 83 elected representatives, involved in many areas: education and training, transportation, economic development, land use planning, the environment, culture, sports, etc. Since 2007, it has been the port authority for the ports of Brest, Lorient, and Saint-Malo, to which Concarneau, Roscoff, and Saint-Brieuc-Légué were added in January 2017, along with the ports connected to the Breton islands (21 ports in total). The ports of Brittany recorded 7,692 tons of freight traffic in 2024. Saint-Malo and Roscoff are ferry terminals. The Brittany region is investing heavily in infrastructure and service quality; for example, the modernization of the ferry terminal at the port of Saint-Malo is the major project of the current term of office. This terminal is an important maritime departure point for England and the Channel Islands. Every year, many travelers pass through this terminal to reach destinations such as Portsmouth or the islands of Jersey and Guernsey. The aim is to transform this iconic location, making the necessary changes to maintain the attractiveness of the destination and adapting it to the needs of 21st-century travelers.
