Invited by Ship.Energy, our project manager Edgar Gillet attended the Nordic Baltic Maritime Forum to present the European research project MAGPIE (Smart Green Ports of the Future). This invitation followed the publication of a detailed overview of the project in the specialized magazine Bunkerspot.
While discussions at the Forum focused on alternative fuels and their prospects in the Baltic Sea, the event program also featured speeches by David Osborn, Director of the Marine Environment Division at the International Maritime Organization, Maja Markovčić Kostelac, Executive Director of the European Maritime Safety Agency, and Finland’s Minister of Transport, Lulu Ranne.

The event also allowed AIVP to meet a member of its network, the Port of Helsinki. Located in the historic Olympiaterminal building, constructed for the 1952 Olympic Games, the Port of Helsinki is currently redeveloping its footprint by relocating its container and bulk operations to the western part of the city. The city itself is reclaiming the former container terminal site, while development continues at the ferry terminal linking the Finnish capital to Tallinn, Estonia’s capital, one of the busiest ferry routes in the world, handling around 8 million passengers annually.

Despite the suspension of cruises to Saint Petersburg, Helsinki is also establishing itself as a top cruise destination, with figures rising again since the end of the pandemic. As a result, its dedicated cruise terminal is also set to be redesigned, while the waterfront of the historic Katajanokka port district is expected, in the medium term, to host a new complex including a museum dedicated to Helsinki’s maritime history as well as new offices for the port authority, all developed in consultation with local residents.
