Port of Vancouver publishes its Boaters’ Handbook

Commercial and recreational vessels share the waters in the Port of Vancouver (Canada), which means it is crucial for all marine users to be aware of the rules and procedures to follow to ensure safety and harmony on the water. The Boaters’ Handbook covers the safety rules and procedures that apply to or impact recreational marine users, it provides guidelines and best practices to help protect local ecosystems and be good neighbors to nearby communities, and it identifies essential amenities within the limits of the port, including recreational anchorages and fuel stations. The handbook is part of an ongoing boating safety initiative, which includes engagements around the water and seasonal education pop-ups at local boat ramps.

France Invests in Maritime Decarbonization Using EU Carbon Tax Revenues

In Saint-Nazaire (France) on May 26, French Prime Minister François Bayrou announced that part of the revenue from the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), which has included the maritime sector since January 2024, will be used to help fund the sector's decarbonization. Shipowners of vessels over 5,000 GT must now offset 70% of their emissions this year and 100% from 2026. Although the industry estimates it will need €1.4 billion per year to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, only €90 million has been allocated annually, significantly less than previously promised. The sector is still awaiting details on the €1.5 billion investment fund announced by Emmanuel Macron in 2023.
