New Member Interview: Port of Baie-Comeau – a port close to its inhabitants

Located in the Manicouagan-Uapishka World Biosphere Reserve in Quebec, Canada, the Port of Baie-Comeau is distinguished by its diversity. As a regional port, it plays an important role on the St. Lawrence as a cruise ship port of call, manufacturing hub and grain port. The AIVP joins the 6th Adriatic Sea Forum in Dubrovnik 

On the 4th of May, AIVP was represented by Mr. Alberto Cappato, secretary of the AIVP, in a session focusing on balancing the needs of tourist destinations with the growth of maritime tourists in the Adriatic, that took place during the 6th Adriatic Sea Forum in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Other speakers in the session were the mayors of Dubrovnik, Hvar and Vlore, the deputy mayor of Koper and the President of FAIC (Forum of Adriatic and Ionian Cities), Mayor as well of the City of Fano. Mr. Cappato highlighted the need to establish dialogue with all stakeholders in port cities to strike a balance between the growth of touristic activities and the needs of the local citizens. Another key point he made was also that the sustainable development ambitions of port cities have not been affected by the pandemic and today is taken ever more seriously than before, with renewed efforts by port authorities, municipalities and private companies.

7th Meeting of the AIVP – MedCruise Working Group on Cruises and Port Cities

The MedCruise-AIVP Joint Working Group on Cruise and Port Cities was held last week on the 4th of May. The meeting focused on an overview of activities carried out in 2021-2022 and looked ahead to the aims and targets set out for 2023. The participants of this Working Group include ports from Canada, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Turkey. The new goal of the group will be to identify key principles for sustainable cruise activities in port cities and draft a base document that can be use by its members to foster local agreements.

AIVP Agenda 2030: the Port and the City of Montreal are committed

Montreal in Quebec is one of the biggest port cities not just in North America, but in the French-speaking world. With its ocean port on the majestic Saint Lawrence river, relations between the City of Montreal and the local Port Authority are more promising than ever. Representatives from the two Canadian institutions were in Paris recently, to sign up to AIVP’s 2030 Agenda. They undertake to pursue the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals together, in their respective roles as port city and port authority. Through the liaison committee set up and regular dialogue between their staff, the two bodies are already working in tandem in a number of areas, ranging from the city-port interface zone, to biodiversity conservation, promoting maritime culture, coexistence with neighbouring communities, and climate change adaptation. Ms Valérie Plante, Mayor of Montreal, and Mr Martin Imbleau, CEO of APM Port de Montréal, have been talking to us about their shared City Port ambitions. The City and Port Authority of Montreal have been members of AIVP since 2022 and 1993 respectively.

AIVP new member : Alkïos

ALKÏOS is a business ecosystem designed to support the living. It helps public and private sector organisations, companies, local and regional authorities to incorporate environmental issues, and particularly biodiversity, into the design and deployment of their development projects and strategies. It does this by providing expertise in the fields of biodiversity (wildlife, habitats, etc.), environmental DNA-based monitoring, polluted sites and soils (terrestrial and marine environments), nature-based solutions, and territorial resilience amongst other topics.
