Seafrigo: The cold chain specialist

Seafrigo is a logistics company specialized in the global food logistics chain. It is specialized in handling frozen, chilled and ambient products with reefers and refrigerated warehouses. Through its global network of offices and variety of services it provides – ocean freight, air freight, warehousing, hinterland modalities, and customs brokerage – they are experts of the food supply chain. In this interview, the AIVP explores Seafrigo’s knowledge in relation to goal 7 of the AIVP Agenda 2030, “Quality food for all”. Interview with Stéphane Desseigne, Group Development Director.

A Port City Atlas for European Port City Territories

The “Port City Atlas - Mapping European Port City Territories: From Understanding to Design” is co-authored by AIVP expert Carola Hein and Yvonne van Mil and Lucija Azman-Momirski. New member: Green City Organisation, specialized in marine pollution prevention

Green City Organisation is a design and engineering agency that aims to capture pollutants emitted by coastal cities before they can reach the ocean. Using its fully replicable solutions, the agency’s ambition is to pass on a clean ocean to future generations. This is in line with commitment 10 of the AIVP 2030 Agenda (Protecting biodiversity), which highlights the importance of improving the quality of port waters and preventing the destruction of sensitive natural habitats.

COP27’s implications for port-cities

COP27 finished on November 20th, 2022, after extensive deliberations. The event, which took place in Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt), resulted in the historical creation of the “loss and damage” fund and other decisions that will have an impact on ports and cities. The shipping sector, which accounts for ~80% of all global trade and is the backbone of the world’s logistical supply chain, was at the heart of numerous discussions.

ETT is an Italian based digital innovation and ICT (Information and Communications Technology) Factory. ETT delivers specific digital solutions for process efficiency and optimization and develops services for distributed networks of smart sensors integration and management. In the frame of their Smart City Solutions, they offer digital solutions to help monitor and organize environmental data (marine, inland, energy, and buildings infrastructures) and to facilitate governance. Edouard Philippe, president of the AIVP, seeks to improve relations with Vietnamese port cities

During a visit to Le Havre on September 26th, 2022, Vietnamese Minister of Interior Pham Thi Thanh Tra met with Mr. Edouard Philippe, president of the AIVP and mayor of Le Havre. On this occasion, Mr. Philippe, expressed his strong wish to promote relations between Le Havre and Vietnamese cities, especially port cities, to exchange on experiences and good practices. He wished to enhance the assets of both France and Vietnam in economic development and maritime transport and logistics. These aims are an integral part of the AIVP’s mission. To establish partnerships and cooperation projects, he proposed the twinning of Le Havre with a coastal city in Vietnam. He proposed to have Le Havre and Vietnamese shipping companies to exchange trade delegations.

Sustainably cruising into World Tourism Day

World Tourism Day has been held on 27 September since 1980. As the tourism sector continues to grow, the impacts it has on the environment is increasing as well. The cruise industry has been taking measures to reduce its impact and to sail its way into a sustainable future. As the sector was heavily impacted by Covid during the past two years, it has taken the time to reshape itself. Green corridors for cruise ships have been created, cruise lines have discussed with cities and ports on how to collaborate more sustainably, and some lines have banned single use plastic. To understand better the steps that ports, municipalities, and cruise organisations are taking to support the sustainable transition of cruising, we have asked some of our members the following question for World Tourism Day: "How can local authorities (port authorities and municipalities) support sustainable cruise/maritime tourism in port cities?"

Port Authority of New South Wales: Leading the energy transition in Australian port cities

The Port Authority of New South Wales, who manages the navigation, security and operational safety needs of commercial shipping in the various ports of New South Wales, has taken key actions to reduce their emissions and accelerate their energy transition. Ryan Bennett, Senior Manager Planning & Sustainability, shares with us the advances in adjusting the Port Authority of New South Wales to their carbon emission reduction targets and the Net Zero targets. He also informs us that the Port Authority of NSW will be installing and supplying shore power for ships at all 5 major commercial berths at Bays Port in Sydney Harbour, which is a world-first for a dry-bulk precinct and a first in the Southern Hemisphere for a cruise terminal.
