Liverpool and Kota Kinabalu: reviving old port areas
Liverpool (United Kingdom) and Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia) are transforming their former port areas. Liverpool launched a public consultation on the creation of a public urban regeneration body (MDC) for around 174 hectares in the North Docks. The plan includes 17,000 homes and 465,000 m² of commercial space, aiming to create a new integrated neighbourhood along the waterfront. In Kota Kinabalu, the former port is becoming Jesselton Docklands, a project estimated at around 850 million euros, led by a consortium bringing together local authorities and private investors. It will include a cruise terminal, hotels, and cultural and commercial spaces. Both cases show how disused port waterfronts can become hubs for housing, employment, and tourism.
