In Riga, a new coal terminal has been built on the island of Krievu. Various measures were taken to prevent coal dust from being dispersed into the air and minimise the environmental impact for the neighbouring districts of Krievu.
Coal storage areas will be continuously sprayed using special snow cannons in winter, or with water sprinklers during warmer periods. Coal wagons will be unloaded in an enclosed area. The coal will be sorted in underground bunkers, then transferred to ships via a sealed conveyor.
Windbreaks measuring 23 metres in height have been erected along a 2 km stretch, taking into account the prevailing winds. These barriers were awarded the 14th annual Riga architectural prize in October 2019.
