The “Paseo del Bajo” allows to connect the motorways to the north and south of the capital via a 7.1 km corridor separating medium and long distance HGVs and coaches (4 dedicated lanes) from smaller vehicles (2 x 4 lanes).
The route runs the length of the redeveloped former port district of Puerto Madero. A section of the road is underground, allowing a smoother connection between Puerto Madero and the city, with a series of footbridges, cycle lanes and 136,000 m2 of new green spaces.
The project is intended to ensure safer, more fluid traffic, shorter journey times and less visual and noise pollution for the zone, where congestion has been estimated at more than 25,000 vehicles per day, including 10,000 trucks. It will bring benefits not just to the city, but also to the port, which will be more easily accessible.
Work began in 2017, and the new development was inaugurated on May 27, 2019.
