Governance commitments for sustainable port cities

Today, it is unquestionable that reaching a sustainable development model for our society, respecting the earth boundaries is (or should be) our main goal. Global initiatives like the SDGs and the AIVP Agenda 2030, inspire and impulse different actors towards this greater goal. But talking is easier than doing, and there are governance challenges along the way, as Prof. Peter Hall shows us in this article. In the coming weeks we will focus on port-city governance processes to learn more about the difficulties that may emerge and the different solutions that ports and cities found to continue this path towards sustainable development.

City Port Workshops in Le Havre: co-construction at the helm!

Over 40 representatives of institutional and professional organisations came together on 1 December 2020, to discuss the future of the 26 hectares of port land and docks at the La Citadelle site in Le Havre (France). At the entrance to the city, just a short distance from the station, cruise terminal and recently developed Nelson Mandela esplanade, a new symbol of the interface between the City and Port, La Citadelle is already home to the cross-Channel ferry terminal, the Higher School of the Merchant Navy, the port’s HQ, and several of its technical workshops. Around this pivotal site, the future relationship between the city and port of Le Havre will be shaped in the coming years.

San Antonio Port: Incentivising Port-City Integration through Citizen Participation

The Port of San Antonio aims not only to increase the volume of goods handled but also to ensure the development of human capital, essential criteria for ensuring competitiveness. The port also seeks to strengthen the link with the community and to promote the Port City integration through citizen participation. The extensive participation program regarding the modification of the Urban Development Plan is a perfect example.
